Save Gedling Recycling Centre

The Tory run County Council are proposing to close the Gedling Household Waste and Recyling Centre on Arnold Lane. The County Council are looking to save money and claim that the Centre at Gedling is poorly utilized. They also believe that many people who live outside the County Council area, such as residents of the City of Nottingham are crossing the "County border" to use the Centre rather than their own Centre within the City boundaries.

Gedling Liberal Democrats would argue that far from being poorly utilized the Centre at Gedling is well used - last year it generated more waste than any other Centre in the County. Gedling Borough Councillor Andrew Ellwood, who represents a ward close to the Centre, stated: "Local residents are rightly concerned that there will be an increase in fly-tipping in the area if the Centre closes. If the Centre does close residents in Carlton and Gedling face a twelve mile round trip to the last remaining Recyling Centre in Gedling Borough at Calverton. For residents in Colwick the trip could be nearly eighteen miles."

Fellow Lib Dem Gedling Borough Councillor Paul Hughes stated: "We have launched a petition to try and persuade the County Council to keep the Centre open. So far we have got 500 signatures- mostly from people who actually use the Centre. The addresses recorded on our petition show that the vast majority of the people live within the County Council area - we could only identify 16% of the users of the Centre as being residents from the City of Nottingham."

If you feel that the County Council should keep the Recyling Centre open why not "sign" our online petition (see "Sign Our Petition" on the left hand column of our Home page)
